LOCAL BUSINESSMAN AND PHILANTHROPIST PURCHASES HADLEY POTTERY

New Owner Plans to Renovate Historic Building and Improve Production

(LOUISVILLE, KY)-Local investor and philanthropist, Brook Smith, has purchased Louisville’s  iconic ceramics shop, with the intent to bring the business back to its former glory and build a secure future for a historical Louisville staple.

After more than 80 years in business, Hadley announced its closing in early 2022, and Brook purchased the business from long time employee Jerry Day and his son, Josh.  Jerry has worked at Hadley Pottery since 1974 when he was 17 years old.  Jerry’s father Tom worked at the factory with Mary Alice Hadley in the early days and his grandfather, Perry, helped her start the business in the 1940s.

Brook Smith, with a long history of supporting local businesses, founders and non-profits, has been going to the factory since he was five years old with his mom, and believes a “little wind in the sails” can build a secure future for the business and keep their legacy alive for many decades to come.  All the current employees will be retained as well as some additional hires to expand the production capacity with Josh Day heading up production.

“We would not be able to do this if we didn't have the talent and dedication of the people working at the factory. Our intent is to honor the brand and legacy of Mary Alice and all of the people that have been a part of this Louisville Icon since its inception in 1940,” says Brook. “We want to thank all the customers who have shown their loyalty for so many years.”

The facility will be renovated, and equipment will be repaired and replaced as required to improve the production of the ware. While the implementation of the improvements are in process, the business will be open on a limited schedule. Full stabilization is expected by mid 2023.

Hadley Pottery sells artistic serving dishes, kitchenware and other ceramic products both online and in store, is located at 1570 Story Avenue in Butchertown.  For more information and updates visit hadleypottery.com or reach out to future@hadleypottery.com.
