Is it safe to keep using dishes with hairline cracks or chips?
No — and most people keep using them anyway. Hairline cracks (called crazing) and chips break the protective glaze layer that keeps bacteria out. Once that layer is compromised, bacteria and food residue collect in those crevices in ways a dishwasher can't reach.
A crazed or chipped dish is not truly cleanable. It looks fine. It isn't. The right answer is to replace it.
M.A. Hadley stoneware is fired at 2,300°F — a process that creates an exceptionally hard, durable surface that resists crazing far longer than most commercial dinnerware.
Do ceramic dishes contain lead?
Some do. Lead has historically been used in ceramic glazes to create smooth, glossy finishes — and it's still present in older sets and in many mass-produced dishes made overseas without US safety oversight.
The risk increases with age and wear. Acidic foods — tomatoes, citrus, vinegar, wine — accelerate leaching from compromised glazes. If your dishes are more than 20 years old or were made outside the US, it's worth taking seriously.
M.A. Hadley pottery is lead-free and cadmium-free.
Are plastic and melamine dishes safe for food?
Not ideally. Plastic and melamine dishes release microplastic particles into food — and heat accelerates the process significantly. Hot meals, the microwave, and repeated dishwasher cycles all degrade the surface faster.
Studies have found microplastics in human blood, lung tissue, and organs. The older and more worn the dish, the higher the rate of particle release. This is a slow accumulation problem, not an immediate one — which is part of why it gets overlooked.
Fired stoneware has no coatings and no plastics. What you see is the dish itself — clay and glaze, fused permanently at high heat.
Is ceramic microwave safe?
Most high-fired stoneware is microwave safe — the clay and glaze don't absorb microwave energy the way metal does. The exception is ceramic with metallic accents or metallic glaze elements, which should stay out of the microwave.
When in doubt, check with the manufacturer. Any reputable American-made stoneware should tell you clearly.
M.A. Hadley pottery is microwave safe. It's also oven safe and dishwasher safe — made for real daily use, not just display.
How long should a good set of dishes last?
Mass-produced dinnerware — especially anything with coatings or printed-on decoration — typically shows meaningful wear within 5 to 10 years of daily use. The glaze dulls, colors fade, and surface integrity breaks down.
Well-made stoneware is a different category. Fired correctly and cared for reasonably, it should last decades — and then some. The people who own M.A. Hadley pieces tend to keep them for 30, 40, 50 years. Most people pass them down.
Why is handmade pottery more expensive than store-bought dishes?
Because every piece takes significantly more time. A mass-produced dish is cast in a mold, decorated by machine, and fired in a continuous kiln. A handmade piece is shaped, trimmed, hand-decorated by a person, and fired individually.
The difference shows in the result — and in the lifespan. A $15 dish replaced every 10 years costs more over a lifetime than a $75 dish that lasts 40. Handmade pottery isn't an indulgence. For most people who make the switch, it turns out to be the more practical choice.
All Hadley Pottery pieces are handmade and hand-painted.
What dishes are worth passing down?
The ones that were made to last, made to be used, and made with enough character that someone wants to keep them. Most dinnerware fails all three — it's fragile, it's purely functional, and it has no story.
Handmade pottery — especially signed, artist-made work — is the exception. It carries the memory of every table it's ever been on. That's not sentimentality. That's just what happens when an object has genuine quality and a human hand behind it.
Every M.A. Hadley piece is signed by the artist who painted it. That's not a marketing detail — it's the whole point.
The art on the birthplate plate is extremely similar to the 3 others that I ordered while I was in the store in July of 2024. The colors used in this new plate are very harsh and dark. The other 3 are the traditional soft pink and soft greens with the 2 colors of the traditional Lighter and darker blues. The pink is actually an orange when hanging with the other 3 and the soft green is a harsh dark green on the tree. The painted squiggle with the flowers in each side of the plate is nowhere near a pink and it’s a different design and flower than all of my others. Even my own children’s plates from the early 90’s have the soft pick and green in them. This new plate looks very out of place in the grouping. I'm not a fan of the harsh bold colors used on this new plate and disappointed in the darker shades of these colors used. Please use the traditional soft pink and greens again.
Pictured on top is the personalized plate I just bought for my nephew along with a picture of my son's plate (now 17 years old). The paint tones of the blues and coral paints of the newer plate just ordered is much richer/darker in comparison to my son's piece. I honestly prefer tones and even the details of my son's older version. Not going to lie...I was a bit disappointed opening this piece along with a cereal bowl I purchased. Additionally, the price has gone up astronomically...in 2020 a personalized bowl, plate & mug cost $155. Now, 1 cereal bowl & children's plate costs $157.
Thank you for this wonderful plate! We have seven Grandchildren - and each one receives a personalized Hadley plate when they are born. A cherished tradition, thanks to your EXCELLENT WORK!!
Love the personal touch! I sent a note asking the designers to match my new grand daughter's plate to the one I purchased for her mother some 30 years ago. They replied immediately and matched the designs (which have changed just a bit) exactly. Thanks, Hadley!
I love each piece of personalized pottery that Ive ordered! Turnaround was fast, and every piece has its own special personality.
Really sets a fun table!!
I have an entire collection of these plates. The color of this plate is nowhere near the color of the originals.
The artwork is not as intricate.
I realize the factory has changed hands. I am quite disappointed in the new products.
I lost my previous comment. Maybe you are able to connect the two.
I was making comment on the lettering on the plate.
The colored shading takes away the look of hand painting!
Iam sorry for the change.

The plate I purchased for my grandson is adorable. It goes with my collection that I started over 30 years ago when my own children were young! I would definitely recommend these to someone who loves collecting high quality pottery!
I gift these to all the babies our lives are being blessed with as our friends’ kid’s have babies! And as we have grandkids! Nothing better than a classic keepsake.
I love the birth and wedding plates. I am disappointed by how Michelin has changed. I have 14 birth plates and 4 wedding plates. Until the 2025 plates the plates were on a Greyish background and the new ones are closer to white
Hanging side by side there is a noticeable difference.
The wedding plate has a very grainy surface
The personalized plate for my niece was absolutely adorable and loved by her parents! I know it will become a special part of her nursery and a keepsake for the future.
This was an online order that was shipped as a gift so I never saw the plates. The recipient thanked me and loves them. However, there was no gift note in the shipment, so the recipient had to call Hadley to find out who sent it. I had even called Hadley while ordering online to be sure I properly ordered as a gift with acknowledgment included.
Though it was supposed to be a Christmas surprise, the recipients opened the package early, and were delighted by the plate celebrating the birth of their daughter. I understand that they will soon be ordering a plate of their own, to mark their wedding anniversary. Success!
Great customer service team answered my questions in person via phone (skip the AI, your people are the best!). Arrived early for which I was grateful and delighted!
We have bought these for many years.
We like the plate. We prefer the gray color background on the plate than the current cream/white.
We also ordered the wedding plate for our daughter. It is very nice.
We do enjoy using Hadley in our home and give it as gifts!
We have the personalized wedding plate and 3 personalized boy plates and 2 personalized girl plates for our 5 children. One plate accidentally fell from the wall and broke. I was so upset as it was my daughter's plate from her birth in 2001 (yes, 24 years ago)! The team at Hadley Pottery was able to make me a new personalized plate just like the old and it has been returned safely to the wall with the others! I can't thank Hadley Pottery enough for recreating this special family keepsake for us! Our oldest son will be getting married next year and we plan to start the tradition for him with a personalized wedding plate (and hopefully some kids plates some day as well!). We love Hadley Pottery!
